Samaria Gorge to stay closed Wednesday, September 23, as heavy rain forecast continues
The Samaria Gorge will remain closed to visitors on Wednesday, September 23, after forecast rainfall in the area exceeded the approved safety thresholds for its operation, the Natural Environment and Climate Change Agency (OFYPEKA) announced.
The decision follows an updated weather bulletin from the National Meteorological Service (EMY) covering conditions expected in the region. According to the forecast, strong rain or storms are expected on Wednesday, with rainfall estimated at up to 9 millimeters in the Xyloskalo area and up to 8 millimeters in Agia Roumeli.
Those figures exceed the limits set by the Region of Chania for the gorge’s operation, prompting authorities to suspend access for safety reasons. As a result, Samaria Gorge will remain closed at both entrances throughout Wednesday.
This marks the latest in a series of closures this week: the gorge was also shut on Tuesday, September 22, and on September 16, due to earlier bouts of unstable weather.
Possible reversal if forecast improves
OFYPEKA said the closure could be reconsidered if weather forecasts improve significantly. If EMY issues an updated forecast showing better conditions, a new announcement on the gorge’s operating status will follow at 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday.
