Samaria Gorge stays closed Sunday, September 27, as rain forecast reaches 16mm

The Samaria Gorge will remain closed to visitors on Sunday, September 27, 2026, from both the Xyloskalo and Agia Roumeli entrances, the Natural Environment and Climate Change Agency (OFYPEKA) announced.

The decision follows an updated forecast bulletin from the National Meteorological Service (EMY), which predicts increased cloud cover with local rain, showers and storms for the area on Sunday. According to OFYPEKA, rainfall could reach up to 10mm around Xyloskalo and up to 16mm in the Agia Roumeli area, both figures the agency says exceed the limits approved by the Region of Chania for the national park’s operation.

Second consecutive closure

Sunday’s closure follows a similar suspension announced for Saturday, September 26, which was also attributed to forecast rainfall. The gorge has faced repeated closures in recent days as heavy weather forecasts have prompted the agency to invoke its operating protocol.

The new closure comes as residents and business owners in Agia Roumeli continue to voice objections to the current protocol governing the gorge’s operation. According to reports, locals have called for changes to how weather conditions are assessed and how decisions to open or close the national park are reached.

Possible reversal if weather improves

OFYPEKA said the Sunday closure could still be reconsidered if weather conditions improve. Should EMY update its forecast with more favorable data, the agency said it would issue a new announcement at 06:30 on Sunday morning.

As of the current forecast, however, the Samaria Gorge remains closed from both entrances on Sunday, September 27, 2026. The closure adds to a string of similar suspensions this month, as storms and cooler weather reach Crete over the weekend. Visitors planning trips to the island’s gorges are advised to check for updates before travelling.
