Samaria Gorge stays closed Friday as OFYPEKA cites rain forecast exceeding safety limits
The Samaria Gorge will remain closed to visitors from both entrances on Friday, September 25, 2026, the Organization of Natural Environment and Climate Change (OFYPEKA) announced.
According to OFYPEKA, the updated forecast bulletin from the National Meteorological Service (EMY) predicts rainfall of up to 12mm in the Xyloskalo area and up to 10mm around Agia Roumeli for Friday. The organization said these figures exceed the operational limits approved by the Region of Chania for the gorge to remain open to the public.
Repeated closures this month
Friday’s closure adds to a series of shutdowns this month tied to persistent wet-weather forecasts. The gorge was also shut on Thursday, September 24, following similar closures earlier in the week, as forecasters continued to flag rainfall above the thresholds set for safe operation.
The wider pattern fits a broader shift in conditions across the island, with autumn weather bringing showers and falling temperatures to Crete in recent days. Visitors planning to explore any of the island’s gorges are advised to check official updates before travelling.
OFYPEKA said that if EMY’s forecast shows an improvement in weather conditions, a new announcement on the gorge’s status would be issued at 6:30am on Friday.
