Samaria Gorge stays closed Friday as forecast rain again exceeds safety limits

The Organization of Natural Environment and Climate Change (OFYPEKA) has announced that Samaria Gorge will remain closed to visitors at both entrances on Friday, September 25, 2026, citing rainfall forecasts that exceed the safety limits set for its operation.

According to OFYPEKA, the updated forecast bulletin from the National Meteorological Service (EMY) predicts up to 12mm of rain in the Xyloskalo area and up to 10mm in the Agia Roumeli area for Friday. Since these figures surpass the approved thresholds set by the Region of Crete’s Chania Regional Unit for the gorge’s operation, the organization decided to keep it shut for the day.

The closure covers both entrances to the gorge, at Xyloskalo and Agia Roumeli, meaning no visitors will be permitted to enter or hike through Samaria on Friday.

This marks the latest in a series of closures this week. Samaria Gorge was also closed on Thursday, September 24, and had previously shut on Wednesday, September 23, and Tuesday, September 22, as unsettled weather continued to affect the region.

OFYPEKA has not indicated when the gorge will reopen, and any decision will depend on subsequent EMY forecasts and updated safety assessments by the Chania Regional Unit.
