Samaria Gorge closes Tuesday, September 22, as heavy rain forecast

The Samaria Gorge will remain closed to visitors at both entrances on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, due to a forecast of heavy rain, the Region of Chania announced.

The decision follows an updated forecast bulletin from the National Meteorological Service (EMY), which predicts strong rainfall or storms for the Xyloskalo area of up to 10.5 mm and for the Agia Roumeli area of up to 8 mm on Tuesday. According to the Natural Environment and Climate Change Organization (OFYPEKA), these rainfall values exceed the approved thresholds set for the gorge’s operation.

Decision by the Region of Chania

Based on the OFYPEKA assessment that the forecast rainfall exceeds the limits allowed for safe operation, the Region of Chania decided that the gorge would be closed to visitors from both entrances on Tuesday. Similar precautionary closures have shut the gorge earlier this month as unsettled weather has repeatedly affected the schedule.

OFYPEKA had already urged caution around the gorge as unstable weather patterns moved across the region this week. Authorities have not indicated when the gorge is expected to reopen, and further closures may follow depending on subsequent EMY bulletins.

Visitors planning to explore Crete’s gorges are advised to check official announcements before travelling, as access can change at short notice during periods of unstable weather.
