Large area of Heraklion left without power for hours after resident reports transformer explosion

A large area of Heraklion has been without electricity for about four hours, with residents telling Cretalive that the problem began in the early hours of Wednesday.

According to the testimony of one resident, an explosion occurred shortly before 4 a.m. in three transformers mounted on a pole at the junction of Knossou and Idaias streets, following a power cut in the area.

The resident told Cretalive that a large section of the surrounding area has remained without power since that time, and that residents contacted the Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network Operator (HEDNO, known in Greek as ΔΕΔΔΗΕ) early in the morning to request an urgent repair crew to fix the fault.

The resident said the problems at this specific location were not new. She claimed that around two months earlier she had contacted the responsible service after hearing loud noises from the transformers, which she attributed to humidity, and had requested that maintenance be carried out.

“I had called the service personally, because I could hear the transformers ‘screeching’ due to humidity, and I had asked them to come and check them,” she said, adding that no action was taken at the time.

Residents are now calling for the immediate restoration of power, as well as an inspection of the equipment at the site to determine the cause of the fault.
