Heraklion port authority warns of winds up to 8 Beaufort

Heraklion’s Central Port Authority has issued a warning for strong winds reaching up to 8 Beaufort in the sea areas around Crete, calling on boat owners and maritime professionals to take the necessary protective measures.
According to a gale announcement from the National Meteorological Service (EMY), strong winds were forecast for Wednesday, October 14, in the following sea areas:
- Western Cretan Sea: northerly winds of 7 to 8 Beaufort, at least until 16:00 UTC.
- Southeastern Aegean–Ikaria: northerly and northeasterly winds of 7 to 8 Beaufort in the areas specified in the announcement, at least until 16:00 UTC.
- Southwestern Cretan Sea: westerly and northwesterly winds of 7 to 8 Beaufort, at least until 10:00 UTC.
Recommendations for boat owners
The Central Port Authority of Heraklion has called on all owners of ships and small boats moored within its area of jurisdiction to take all appropriate measures to secure their vessels.
It also recommended that commercial fishing boats, pleasure craft and small vessels avoid putting to sea for as long as the severe weather conditions remain in force.
Finally, towing and lifesaving services, along with fishing and volunteer groups, were asked to remain on standby to assist if needed. Port authorities said they are monitoring the evolving weather conditions, with the priority being the safety of navigation and the prevention of accidents.
The warning follows a broader forecast from EMY of winds up to 8 Beaufort and rain across Crete through Thursday, and comes as forecasters have noted that saturated ground keeps flood risk elevated on the island even as storms ease.
