Greece forecasts new storms and winds up to 8 Beaufort from Wednesday, with Crete expecting the heaviest rain
Greek weather forecasters say conditions will deteriorate again from Wednesday, with rain, storms and winds strengthening to as much as 8 Beaufort, and Crete expected to record the highest rainfall totals in the country.
Monday, September 28, brought improved weather with more sunshine, following a wet weekend across parts of Greece. Compared with that weekend weather, no intense phenomena were expected on Monday, although north winds continued to blow at 7 Beaufort in the Aegean. Temperatures were forecast to stay low for the season, only slightly above 20 degrees Celsius. Rain was expected in Crete, Sterea Ellada, Thessaly, Chalkidiki and the Aegean islands, with heavier rainfall forecast for the Peloponnese from midday.
Tuesday and Wednesday outlook
Meteorologist Anastasia Tyraski said the pattern would continue on Tuesday, with stronger winds and localized rain expected in eastern Thessaly, Sterea Ellada, Evia, northern Crete and the Cyclades.
According to the forecast, a new deterioration is expected from Wednesday, when northern and northeastern winds are forecast to blow at gale force while rain and storms intensify across the eastern part of the country, particularly the eastern mainland, the Aegean and Crete. The largest rainfall amounts are expected in Evia and Crete.
Thursday: further rain and falling temperatures
New rain is expected on Thursday in central and southern Greece, mainly in Evia and the southern Aegean. Storms are forecast to return to Crete, along with a further drop in temperature. Because of the strengthened north wind, temperatures are expected to hover around 20 degrees Celsius and could reach a maximum as low as 18 degrees in some areas.

The National Observatory of Athens’ meteo.gr service forecasts local rain mainly over Crete for Monday, September 28, with gradual improvement, along with rising temperatures inland and winds up to 6 Beaufort over the seas. Local rain was also possible in parts of eastern Thessaly, the Sporades and Evia.
Meteo.gr put Monday’s temperature range for Crete at 11 to 22-24 degrees Celsius, compared with 12 to 24 degrees for the Ionian islands and 15 to 24-25 degrees for the rest of the Aegean islands. The forecast follows a period of heavy rainfall on the island, after rainfall exceeding 80mm was recorded in Kolympari over a three-day stretch earlier this month.
