Fire crews contain wildfire near Mouzouras in Chania

The Chania Fire Service was alerted early Tuesday afternoon, September 1, to a fire that broke out in a grass and scrubland area near Mouzouras.
Five fire trucks were dispatched to the scene to contain the front and prevent the fire from spreading further, according to the Fire Service.
The rapid response by firefighters brought the fire under control quickly, averting a larger incident, the Fire Service said. The cause of the fire is expected to be investigated by the competent authorities.
Part of a wider wildfire pattern
The incident follows a series of wildfire alerts across the island this summer. Civil Protection recently placed Crete under a Red Code wildfire alert amid persistent heat and strong winds, while a meteorologist has attributed the elevated risk to a combination of wind, heat and terrain conditions.
A separate blaze was also reported near Prinias in Heraklion, prompting a Fire Service mobilization in that area.
