EMY issues orange warning for Crete as storms and heavy rain hit Greece
The Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY) has updated its emergency weather bulletin, first issued on Friday, to include an orange warning covering parts of Crete. The updated notice, released Sunday, points to severe weather across several regions of Greece, with the worst conditions reported in Evia and the Sporades, where strong rain and storms have been recorded.
According to the bulletin, localized heavy rain, storms and possible hailstorms are expected on Sunday in eastern Thessaly (mainly the regional unit of Magnesia), the Sporades, Crete — mainly its western areas — and the western Cyclades until the morning hours. In Evia, similar conditions are forecast to persist until the afternoon.
EMY also forecasts gale-force northeasterly winds reaching 7 to 8 on the Beaufort scale in the central and northern Aegean.
Detailed forecast for Sunday
Rain and localized storms are expected on Sunday in the Sporades, Magnesia, Evia, eastern Sterea Ellada (including Attica), the eastern Peloponnese, the Cyclades and Crete, per the EMY bulletin.
In Attica, cloudy skies with localized rain are forecast mainly in the northern and eastern parts of the region, with gradual improvement expected by evening. Winds will blow mainly from the north at up to 4-5 Beaufort, reaching 6-7 Beaufort in the region’s east. Temperatures will range from 18 to 21-22 degrees Celsius, with minimum temperatures in the north and east running 3-4 degrees lower.
In Thessaloniki, cloudiness is expected to temporarily increase, with winds from varying directions up to 2-3 Beaufort and temperatures between 16 and 24-25 degrees Celsius.
EMY’s regional temperature forecast lists Western Macedonia from 5 to 20-21 degrees, the rest of Macedonia and Thrace from 7 to 25 degrees, Epirus from 6 to 26 degrees, Thessaly from 6 to 24 degrees, other mainland areas from 9 to 25-27 degrees, Crete from 10 to 22-23 degrees, the Ionian islands from 13 to 23-25 degrees, the northern and northeastern Aegean islands from 15 to 22 degrees, and the rest of the Aegean islands from 16 to 25 degrees Celsius.
Winds in the Aegean are expected to blow mainly from north to northeast at up to 6-7 Beaufort, while in the Ionian Sea winds will blow from northeast to north at up to 4-5 Beaufort, according to the bulletin.
The updated warning follows an earlier forecast of storms and cooler weather reaching Crete over the weekend, part of a broader pattern in which the island’s rain has alternated with warmer spells before a colder shift expected in the coming days.
