Eight people remain trapped in Samaria Gorge as rain blocks rescue approach

Eight people remain trapped inside Samaria Gorge in Chania, as continuous rainfall is preventing rescue teams from safely reaching and evacuating them, according to Cretalive.
As long as the rain continues, the water level and flow of the stream that has formed inside the National Park cannot recede. A rescue operation is expected to begin only once the weather clears and the water starts to subside, the report said. The situation follows an earlier warning that eight workers had become trapped in the gorge as floodwaters blocked their exit path.
Experienced group stays calm
According to the latest information cited by Cretalive, the trapped individuals are experienced and remain calm at the location where they are sheltering. A doctor is with the group, and they have medication and the necessary supplies.
Their communication with the outside world remains good, as they have access to phone, internet and satellite communication. The instructions they have received are clear: not to attempt to leave their current position under any circumstances while the water flow remains dangerous.
Plan for when water recedes
The plan calls for the group to wait until it becomes safe for rescuers to approach. Once the water level drops, a team from the Xyloskalo area is expected to attempt to reach the trapped individuals and then escort them safely out of the gorge.
The incident comes amid a wider period of severe weather across Crete, with rainfall at Xyloskalo previously measured at 318mm as torrents rushed through the gorge. Forecasters have said Crete’s storms are easing but saturated ground is keeping flood risk elevated across the island. Those planning to visit the island’s gorges are advised to follow official guidance before setting out.
