Crete records over 80mm of rain in Kolympari as heavy rainfall hits island over three days
Significant rainfall was recorded across Crete over three days, from Tuesday to Thursday, September 15-17, with totals exceeding 80mm in parts of Chania and reaching 70mm on the Lasithi plateau, according to data from meteo.gr and the National Observatory of Athens.
A map published by meteo.gr shows the geographic distribution of rainfall across Crete from the morning of Tuesday, September 15, to the afternoon of Thursday, September 17, based on readings from a network of 65 weather stations operated by the observatory on the island.
According to Kostas Lagouvardos, Director of Research at the National Observatory of Athens, total rainfall surpassed 80mm in areas of Chania, specifically Kolympari, and reached 70mm on the Lasithi plateau, in Tzermiado.
The heavy rain followed a period of unstable weather that had already prompted precautionary closures elsewhere on the island. The Samaria Gorge closed both entrances on Thursday, September 17, as authorities cited storm forecasts from the national weather service.
Wet conditions also disrupted road travel in parts of Crete during the same period, with roads turning into rivers in Kokkini Hani and causing traffic delays.
Forecasters have since indicated that conditions are expected to ease, with temperatures climbing toward 32°C over the weekend before a colder shift is expected next week.
