Crete braces for isolated storms and near gale-force winds on Wednesday, EMY says
The Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY) forecasts unsettled weather for Crete on Wednesday, September 30, with isolated storms, strong to near gale-force winds and a slight drop in temperatures, particularly in the east and south of the island.
According to EMY, few clouds are expected across Greece, increasing over eastern and southern regions, with local rain forecast for the eastern mainland and the Aegean. Isolated storms are expected specifically over Crete. Winds will blow strong to near gale-force from the north over the Aegean.
The forecasting service meteo.gr, cited in the report, adds that local rain is expected in Eastern Thessaly, Evia, Eastern Sterea, the Northeastern Peloponnese and the Cyclades, while isolated storms will affect Crete.
Temperatures and winds
Temperatures on Crete and in the Cyclades are forecast to range between 18°C and 23°C on Wednesday, somewhat cooler than recent days. Elsewhere in the country, forecasters expect 14–25°C in Northern Greece (9–20°C in Western Macedonia), 15–23°C in Central and Southern Greece, 16–26°C in Western Greece, 16–25°C in the Eastern Aegean islands and 21–26°C in the Dodecanese.
Winds over the Aegean will blow from the north at moderate to strong force, 5 to 6 Beaufort, and locally near gale-force 7 Beaufort, with gusts of 70–80 km/h. Over the Ionian Sea, winds will generally be weak from the east, temporarily reaching moderate 4–5 Beaufort in the Gulf of Patras.
In Attica, forecasters expect temporarily increased cloud cover with local rain mainly in the north, and temperatures of 16–20°C, running 3–4 degrees lower in northern areas. Winds there are expected to reach 6–7 Beaufort in eastern districts, with gusts up to 70 km/h. In Thessaloniki, cloud cover will be patchy and temperatures are expected to range from 16°C to 26°C, with weak winds over the Thermaikos Gulf.
The forecast follows a broader pattern of unsettled autumn weather over Crete this week, after forecasters had already warned of rain, storms and gale-force northerly winds arriving from Wednesday, part of a wider system that forecasters said would bring the heaviest rain to Crete among Greek regions.
