Crete forecast: September opens with heat and meltemi winds, EMY says
Crete’s weather turns to heat and meltemi winds as September opens, according to the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY). The agency’s forecast for Tuesday, September 1, calls for generally clear skies across the island, with north winds continuing a pattern meltemi winds forecasters had earlier expected to strengthen this week.
EMY said winds will blow from northern directions at 4 to 6 Beaufort, while temperatures will range from 22 to 32 degrees Celsius. In southern Crete, the mercury is expected to climb further, locally reaching 34 to 35 degrees Celsius, a level close to the temperatures reaching 38°C forecast for the region earlier in the week.
Monday’s seasonal highs
The forecast follows a day of unusually high temperatures for the season recorded on Monday, August 31, across several parts of Greece, extending a stretch that had already pushed highs of 36-37°C over the preceding days. Three areas of Crete were among the locations with the country’s highest temperatures that day, according to the National Observatory of Athens’ meteo.gr service: Plora, Petrokefali and Gortyna, where the mercury exceeded 36 degrees Celsius.
Plora recorded the second-highest temperature nationwide over the 24-hour period, with the thermometer reaching a maximum of 36.9 degrees Celsius, meteo.gr reported.
