Clear skies continue across Crete on Tuesday as northerly meltemi winds persist

Crete will see generally clear skies on Tuesday, September 8, with a slight drop in temperature, according to the National Meteorological Service (EMY) and meteo.gr, the forecasting service of the National Observatory of Athens. Northerly winds will continue to blow across the Aegean, reaching up to 6 and locally 7 Beaufort.

Nationwide, EMY forecasts sunshine with only limited local cloud cover around midday and in the afternoon, mainly over mountainous areas. Visibility in western areas is expected to be locally reduced overnight and in the early morning.

Temperatures and winds

In Crete and the Aegean islands, temperatures will range from 22 to 34 degrees Celsius, EMY said. Across the rest of the country, highs will vary by region, from 28-29 degrees in Western Macedonia to as high as 34-36 degrees in the southern mainland and parts of the west.

Winds in the Aegean will blow from northerly directions at 4 to 6 Beaufort, locally reaching 7 Beaufort in the Cyclades and Crete, the service said. The forecast follows a pattern reported in recent days, as northerly winds have been affecting the island as the season shifts toward autumn.

The Ionian Sea will see mainly westerly winds of 3-5 Beaufort. In Attica, sunshine is expected with northerly winds up to 4 Beaufort and 5-6 Beaufort in eastern areas, while Athens will see highs of 31-32 degrees. Thessaloniki will also have sunshine, with temperatures reaching 28-29 degrees.

The forecast marks a continuation of the meltemi conditions the island has experienced through the week, following a similar pattern reported for Wednesday, when EMY had projected clear skies and northerly winds with highs of 33°C. Given the sustained wind strength, visitors planning trips to Crete’s coastline should check conditions at local beaches before heading out.
