Crete braces for rain, storms and gale-force northerly winds from Wednesday
Greek weather service meteo.gr forecasts a new deterioration in conditions from Wednesday, September 30, with rain, scattered storms and gale-force northerly winds expected to affect Crete along with other eastern and southern parts of the country.
According to the forecast, conditions will worsen mainly in the eastern and southern parts of Greece, with rainfall over Crete becoming locally intense from midday onward. Northerly winds in the Aegean are expected to strengthen significantly, locally reaching up to 9 Beaufort, while temperatures are set to drop, particularly in eastern and southern areas.
The forecast indicates similar conditions will persist through Thursday and Friday, with rain continuing in the same regions and northerly winds in the Aegean remaining stormy, locally reaching 8 to 9 Beaufort. Over the weekend, forecasters expect improvement in several areas, though phenomena are expected to persist in the southernmost parts of the country, accompanied by stormy winds.
Wednesday: rain and storms intensify
On Wednesday, September 30, increased cloudiness with local rain and scattered storms is forecast for eastern Thessaly, the Sporades, Evia, central and eastern Sterea, eastern and southern Peloponnese, the Cyclades (mainly western areas), and Crete, particularly over sea and coastal areas.
Forecasters say phenomena in Evia and Crete will become locally intense from midday onward. Elsewhere, local rain is expected over the northeastern Aegean islands until the afternoon, and over the western Peloponnese and the southernmost Dodecanese during midday and afternoon hours. Western and northern Greece will see sunny intervals with locally increased cloudiness.
Winds in the Ionian Sea will blow easterly to northeasterly at 3 to 4, locally 5 Beaufort. In the Aegean, stormy northerly winds of 6 to 8, locally 9 Beaufort, will prevail, while only southeastern areas will see northwesterly winds of 4 to 6, locally 7 Beaufort. Temperatures will drop, particularly in eastern and southern regions, where highs will not exceed 21 to 24 degrees Celsius. In western and northern Greece and the Dodecanese, highs will reach 25 to 27 degrees.
Thursday: rain persists in eastern and southern areas
Increased cloudiness and rain are forecast to continue affecting eastern and southern Greece on Thursday, October 1. Local rain and scattered storms are expected in eastern Thessaly, the Sporades, Evia, central and eastern Sterea, eastern and southern Peloponnese, the western Cyclades, the Dodecanese and Crete, with the most notable phenomena expected mainly over Crete’s sea and coastal areas.
The rest of the country will see fairly sunny intervals with limited local cloudiness. Winds in the Ionian will blow easterly to northeasterly at 3 to 5, locally 6 Beaufort, while strong to stormy northerly winds of 6 to 8, locally 9 Beaufort, will continue in the Aegean. Temperatures will show little change, with highs of 22 to 23, locally 24 degrees, in eastern and southern areas, and 25 to 26 degrees, locally 27 in the west, elsewhere.
Friday: gale-force northerly winds continue
Rain and increased cloudiness will continue to affect eastern and southern Greece on Friday, October 2, with local rain and scattered storms expected in eastern Thessaly, the Sporades, Evia, central and eastern Sterea, eastern and southern Peloponnese, the Cyclades and Crete, as well as locally in the Dodecanese and the northern and eastern Aegean. As on previous days, the most notable phenomena are expected mainly over Crete’s sea and coastal areas.
Wind and temperature conditions are forecast to remain broadly unchanged from Thursday, with stormy northerly winds of 6 to 8, locally 9 Beaufort, persisting in the Aegean, and highs of 22 to 24 degrees expected in eastern and southern areas.
The system follows a pattern similar to earlier warnings this month, when forecasters said Greece would face new storms and winds up to 8 Beaufort starting midweek, with Crete expected to receive the heaviest rainfall. Authorities had also issued an orange weather warning during a previous bout of storms and heavy rain affecting the island.
Weekend: improvement expected, but southern areas remain affected
Despite an expected improvement in several regions over the weekend, forecasters say phenomena will persist in the southernmost parts of the country, accompanied by stormy winds. The outlook is consistent with earlier estimates that storms and cooler weather would reach Crete as the broader system moves through the region.
