Crete bans swimming and boat access near Dia island from Wednesday

The Central Port Authority of Heraklion has banned swimming, boat approach, movement and anchoring in the sea area around Dia island, effective from 08:00 on Wednesday, September 2, until further notice.

Under decision no. 40/2026, the restriction covers the maritime zone within 1.5 nautical miles around Dia, according to a statement from the port authority.

Who is affected

The measure applies to recreational vessels, private and professional boats, fishing boats, professional day-trip boats, small craft and other recreational marine vessels operating in the restricted zone.

The port authority said anyone who violates the measures will face the prescribed sanctions, in addition to any criminal or civil liability provided for under current legislation.

Notification to health authorities

The decision has been communicated, among others, to the 7th Health Region of Crete and to the Region of Crete’s Regional Unit of Heraklion, Department of Health and Public Hygiene, the port authority said.
