Crete sees autumn-like clouds and local rain Tuesday, EMY forecasts

The Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY) forecasts autumn-like conditions across Greece on Tuesday, September 15, with cloudiness expected in most parts of the country and local rain and thunderstorms possible over mountainous areas of Crete, along with parts of the mainland.

According to meteo.gr, rain and storms are expected around midday over mountainous areas of central mainland Greece, Macedonia, Thessaly, the Peloponnese and Crete. Local rain is also possible over the Ionian islands during the midday hours. Cloud cover is expected to spread across nearly the entire country from the morning, with the phenomena weakening by evening.

Saharan dust concentrations in the atmosphere, which have affected visibility in recent days, are expected to decrease from the early morning hours, EMY said.

Temperatures and winds

In Crete, temperatures are forecast to range from 12 to 30 degrees Celsius. Elsewhere in the country, highs are expected to reach up to 31 degrees in the central mainland, with lows around 11 degrees in several regions, including western Macedonia, Thessaly and the Peloponnese.

Winds in the Aegean will blow from northerly to northwesterly directions at 4 to 5 Beaufort, weakening to 2-3 Beaufort from northerly to northeasterly directions in the southwestern Aegean. In the Ionian Sea, winds are expected to be weak, up to 3 Beaufort, from variable directions.

In Attica, cloudiness is expected to temporarily increase during the day, with weak northerly to northeasterly winds up to 3 Beaufort and temperatures between 15 and 29 degrees. In Thessaloniki, cloud cover is forecast from the morning, with a chance of light rain in the afternoon, weak winds of 2-3 Beaufort mainly from southerly to southeasterly directions, and temperatures ranging from 16 to 30 degrees.

The unsettled pattern follows a broader shift toward cooler, wetter conditions that prompted OFYPEKA to urge caution at Samaria Gorge ahead of Tuesday’s forecast. Forecasters have also been watching forecast models tracking a possible Mediterranean cyclone that could affect the wider region in the days ahead, as Greece’s temperatures are expected to rise again before an autumn shift arrives next week, according to forecasters.
