Roadworks and heavy traffic cause kilometers-long queues on BOAK near Karteros
Drivers on Crete’s Northern Road Axis (BOAK) faced kilometers-long queues near Karteros on the morning of September 7, as ongoing roadworks combined with a heavy volume of vehicles brought traffic to a near standstill, according to Cretaone.
Photographs published by the outlet showed vehicles moving at very low speeds in the area, with the highway resembling a long parking lot. The publication described drivers as testing their patience amid the delays.
Cretaone attributed the congestion to a combination of factors: work being carried out at the site, the traffic regulations required to accommodate it, and increased vehicle volume. Together, these have turned trips to and from Heraklion into a daily ordeal, the outlet reported.
The Karteros delays come as sections of the BOAK highway near the Xiropotamos bridge are also scheduled to close daily this week, part of a broader pattern of works affecting the route through mid-September.
