BOAK closure between Neapoli and Agios Nikolaos extended to September 24, normal traffic resumes September 25-29

The Lasithi Police Directorate has extended the closure of the North Road Axis of Crete (BOAK) between Neapoli and Agios Nikolaos, announcing that vehicle traffic will run normally from September 25 to 29, 2026, once the current works period ends.

According to the police announcement, the closure covers the section from kilometer marker 187 (Neapoli junction) to kilometer marker 197 (Xirokampos junction). It began at 06:00 on September 17, 2026, and will now continue until 17:00 on September 24, 2026, amending the timeframe set out in an earlier announcement issued on September 16. That original notice had already confirmed the BOAK closure between Neapoli and Agios Nikolaos starting September 17.

For the five-day period from September 25 to 29, 2026, no traffic restrictions will be in force on the affected section, and vehicles will circulate normally, police said.

During the closure period, vehicles weighing up to twelve tons are being diverted onto the Old National Road. Traffic heading from Agios Nikolaos toward Heraklion will use the Old National Road, while traffic heading from Neapoli toward Agios Nikolaos will follow a route via the Old National Road, Lakonia and the Kritsa junction.

Heavy vehicles exceeding twelve tons in maximum permitted weight are directed to use the South Road Axis, via the provincial road linking Ierapetra and Viannos in Heraklion, in both directions. Drivers relying on rental vehicles for travel between the two towns should plan routes accordingly; further advice for those using rental cars in Crete is available through local providers.

The Lasithi Police Directorate has asked drivers to comply with the signage in place along the detour routes for the duration of the works. Bus operator KTEL Heraklion-Lasithi has separately warned passengers of delays caused by the BOAK roadworks during the closure period.
