Agios Nikolaos hosts 17 divers for eighth Cliff Diving competition this weekend
Agios Nikolaos will host the eighth edition of its international Cliff Diving competition on Saturday, September 19, and Sunday, September 20, at Lake Voulismeni, the Municipality of Agios Nikolaos announced. Seventeen athletes from Europe and the Americas are set to compete, diving from a platform higher than 20 metres.
The event, known as Agios Nikolaos Cliff Diving 2026, is organized by the Municipality of Agios Nikolaos under the auspices of the Greek National Tourism Organisation, the Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports, and the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Island Policy. It is supported by the Region of Crete, the Hellenic Swimming Federation and Infinity Drop.
An official press conference was held on Thursday, September 17, at Lake Voulismeni to present this year’s competition. Speakers included Agios Nikolaos Mayor Manolis Menegakis, Deputy Mayor for Sports Stergios Atsalakis, and two of the participating athletes: Germany’s Jan Wilko Heinzel and Canada’s Caitlyn Padgett. Also present were DAEAN president Giorgos Astroulakis and Maria Stefanaki, a member of the municipality’s Sports Committee and of the Cliff Diving Organizing Committee.
Mayor cites promotional value for the town
Mayor Menegakis told the press conference that the competition has become an important opportunity to promote Agios Nikolaos and demonstrates the town’s capacity to host large, demanding international sporting events. He thanked Deputy Mayor Atsalakis, DAEAN president Astroulakis, Stefanaki and other officials and staff involved in organizing the event, noting the increased organizational demands it requires.
The mayor also referred to the diving platform, which stands higher than 20 metres, saying it raises the difficulty and competitive level of the event. He said he believes Cliff Diving, which he described as closely tied to the lake’s natural and urban setting, has the conditions to continue in Agios Nikolaos in future years. Menegakis added that this year’s sporting events are dedicated to the memory of Natasa Pagalou, a local resident he said had contributed significantly to local sport and volunteering.
Deputy mayor highlights role of volunteers
Deputy Mayor Atsalakis said the municipal administration had committed from the outset not only to continue the event but to strengthen it, and that this commitment was being put into practice. He emphasized the contribution of volunteers and the various services and teams supporting the competition, including the Samaritans, rescue teams and the Special Disaster Response Unit (EMAK), alongside municipal staff and event partners.
Atsalakis described the participation of 17 athletes from around the world as a significant feature of this year’s event and said the municipality’s goal is to further strengthen and upgrade the competition in the coming years.
Athletes describe the setting and rising competition level
German diver Jan Wilko Heinzel spoke warmly about his connection to Agios Nikolaos, built up over the years he has competed there, and about the hospitality athletes receive in the town. He said the competitive level of Cliff Diving has risen noticeably in recent years, with divers attempting increasingly demanding jumps.
Heinzel also pointed to the event’s connection with the local community, saying it is one of the features that sets Agios Nikolaos apart: athletes compete in the heart of the town, with thousands of residents and visitors watching and taking part in the atmosphere from close range.
Canadian athlete Caitlyn Padgett, competing in Agios Nikolaos for the first time, said she was excited both to be in Crete and to face the challenge ahead. For her, this year’s competition carries added significance because she will attempt her first dive from a platform of around 20 metres, the competition height for women in Cliff Diving. She said she had already seen footage of the event from previous years and wanted to experience it in person.
Padgett spoke positively about Agios Nikolaos and Crete and said she hopes to return in the future. She also referred to the event’s safety standards and to the distinct experience of diving into Lake Voulismeni, which she said differs from open-sea competition conditions.
