Agia Irini Gorge in Selino closes until Sunday after heavy rain

The Municipality of Kantanos-Selinos has closed the Agia Irini Gorge, in the municipal unit of East Selino, until Sunday, October 11, because of heavy rainfall in previous days, the municipality announced on October 7.

The municipality said the closure is a precautionary measure for the safety of visitors and asked people not to attempt to enter the gorge until further notice.

According to the announcement, an update on the gorge’s reopening and resumption of access will be issued from Monday, October 12.

Other gorge closures across Crete

The measure adds to a string of recent weather-related restrictions at gorges in Crete, as local authorities have repeatedly closed trails during periods of heavy rain this year. Similar concerns led officials to keep the Samaria Gorge closed on a separate occasion when rain forecasts exceeded safety limits.
