Mixorrouma is a village in the south of the Rethymno region of Crete, 2.6 km from Spili and 7.4 km from the nearest beach on the Libyan Sea coast. The village stands in the belt of country between Rethymno city on the north coast and the southern shoreline, where the land is cut by short gorges running down to the sea. Four of those gorges begin within 6 km of Mixorrouma, and 5 beaches lie within 10 km. Spili, 2.6 km away, is the seat of the Agios Vasileios municipality and the nearest village with a square, shops and tavernas.
Chania (CHQ) is the nearest airport to Mixorrouma. The draw here is the country around the village: gorge walks that start a few kilometres away, the palm lagoon at Preveli, and the pebble coves of the Kerames coast.
Things to do in Mixorrouma
Five outings sit within 8 km of Mixorrouma, listed below from nearest to furthest. Two more gorges add to the walking: Kissos Gorge 5.3 km away and Kakoperatos Gorge at Agios Vasilios 5.6 km away.
- Visit the Saint Raphael monastery. The monastery stands 2.4 km from Mixorrouma at Spili, the closest of the places we list around the village.
- Spend a morning in Spili. The village 2.6 km away is built up a hillside in tiers of stone houses at about 430 m, on the slopes of Mount Vorizi in the Kedros range, and takes its name from the Greek word for cave. About 800 people live in Spili year-round, which keeps it lived-in rather than resort-like.
- Hike the Kourtaliotiko Gorge. The gorge runs for 3 km between the Kouroupa and Koules mountains, 4.2 km from Mixorrouma, and a paved road cuts through the canyon so the viewpoints and the trailhead need no long approach. A waterfall, year-round springs and the chapel of Agios Nikolaos at the base of the cliffs are what most people come for, and our Kourtaliotiko guide covers parking and difficulty.
- Follow the Agia Fotia gorge. This small, lush ravine starts on the Gious Kambos plateau at 750 m and ends 1.5 km later at a spring that runs all year at 500 m, beside the church of Agia Fotini and a large old watermill. The entrance lies 4.2 km from Mixorrouma, and waterfalls sit near the start of the gorge.
- Swim at Preveli. The palm-fringed beach and freshwater lagoon lie 7.6 km away, where the Megalos Potamos river meets the Libyan Sea at the mouth of the Kourtaliotiko gorge. Preveli is the most celebrated beach in southern Crete and draws crowds through the summer.
Beaches in and around Mixorrouma
Mixorrouma has no beach of its own, and the nearest shoreline lies 7.4 km away. Five stretches of coast fall inside 10 km, and they range from a signposted lagoon to coves reached on dirt track.
- Drymiskos lies 7.4 km away, a sequence of coves spanning 3 km known collectively as Drymiskiani Gialia. Rocks and reefs segment them, which suits snorkelling, and the area stays largely undiscovered because it is harder to reach than the rest of the south Rethymno coast. Its westernmost section, Amoudi, is where the paved road from Preveli ends.
- Preveli follows at 7.6 km, also known as Lake Preveli, Phoenix or Finikas. A colony of Theophrastus date palms lines the banks of the Megalos Potamos, one of the few natural palm forests in Europe, and the river runs all year and widens into a long lagoon.
- Agia Fotini at Kerames is 7.9 km away, small pebble beaches around the local port of Agia Fotini, hemmed in by large boulders and clear enough for snorkelling. A narrow, poorly paved road from Kerames village ends here, and the traditional Stavros tavern stands beside it.
- Pahia Ammos at Kerames sits 8 km away, one of the main beaches of Keramiani Gialia south-east of Agia Fotini, reached on a well-maintained dirt track rather than asphalt.
- Ammoudi at Plakias closes the list at 9.2 km, white sand and a rocky seabed under bright green water, with umbrellas, tavernas, rooms and a scuba diving centre. Tamarisk trees beside the sand give the only shade, and a paved road from Lefkogia leads straight to it.

Getting to Mixorrouma
Mixorrouma sits on the crossing between the two coasts of the Rethymno region, and the road that carries it passes through Spili 2.6 km away. That position suits a drive between the north and south shores.
Heading south, the road drops through the Kourtaliotiko Gorge towards the sea, which is the same paved route that serves the gorge viewpoints. The beach resort of Plakias lies further along that coast, about 40 km south of Rethymno at the mouth of the Kotsifos valley, and Preveli sits roughly 10 km east of it. Chania is the nearest airport, so a hire car is the practical way in.
