Samaria Gorge closes at both entrances Tuesday over weather warning

The Organization of Natural Environment and Climate Change (OFYPEKA) announced that Samaria Gorge will remain closed at both entrances on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, due to weather conditions.

According to OFYPEKA, the decision was based on current nowcasting data and the National Meteorological Service’s (EMY) updated morning forecast, which predicted heavy rainfall for the day: up to 25 mm in the Xyloskalo area and up to 20 mm in the Agia Roumeli area. The organization said these values exceed the limits approved by the Region of Chania for the gorge’s operation.

As a result, both the Xyloskalo entrance in the north and the Agia Roumeli entrance in the south will be closed to visitors for the day. The closure was announced for the safety of visitors given the expected conditions.

The gorge had already been the subject of a caution notice from OFYPEKA ahead of the unstable weather forecast for the region. Samaria is one of the most visited gorges in Crete, drawing large numbers of hikers during the open season, and closures are typically announced day by day based on updated forecasts and safety thresholds set by the regional authority.
