Fire service carries out two rescue operations for injured tourists in Chania and Rethymno

Greece’s Fire Service carried out two separate rescue operations for injured tourists in Crete on Thursday, September 10, with incidents in Chania and Rethymno mobilizing crews within hours of each other.

One operation was under way in the Kissamos area involving a woman of American nationality who, according to initial information, injured her leg, specifically her ankle. A rescue effort was organized to move her by private boat to Platanakia beach and then on to Schoinari, where an ambulance from the National Emergency Aid Center (EKAB) was expected to collect her.

Earlier incident near Agios Vasileios

Earlier the same day, a separate incident had already prompted a response from authorities in southern Rethymno. A German tourist, aged approximately 65, was injured while walking on a path near Agios Georgios beach in the Municipality of Agios Vasileios. According to the same sources, this injury was also to the ankle.

Firefighters reached the injured woman and moved her to a safe location, from where EKAB paramedics took over her care. Hiking trails near the coast are a popular part of many visitors’ experiences in Crete, though uneven terrain can pose a risk for walkers.

The Fire Service mobilized two vehicles and four firefighters for each of the two operations.
