Cretan Hospitality Association holds tourism planning meeting in Ierapetra

The Association of Cretan Hospitality held a board meeting in Ierapetra on Wednesday, September 9, that expanded into a broader working session with local government, regional officials, and tourism industry representatives, as the association continues a series of visits to tourist areas across Crete.

The meeting took place at the OSTRIA RESORT & SPA and brought together the Deputy Regional Governor of Lasithi, Ioannis Androulakis; the Mayor of Ierapetra, Emmanouil Fragkoulis; the Region of Crete’s tourism delegate councilor, Kyriakos Kotsoglou; PASOK’s tourism sector head, Katerina Spyridaki; Ierapetra’s deputy mayor for tourism, Giorgos Chatzakis; and local hoteliers and tourism professionals, according to the association.

Participants discussed problems currently facing tourism in Ierapetra and the wider area, along with how the destination could strengthen its position on Crete’s tourism map, the association said. Tourism professionals raised issues affecting the day-to-day operation of their businesses and put forward proposals for reinforcing Ierapetra’s tourism identity and making better use of the area’s potential, according to the report.

Coordinated planning sought

The discussion centered not only on addressing existing problems but on more coordinated planning for the future, with cooperation between the municipality, the region, and the tourism market described as important given that needs vary by area and require targeted interventions, the association said. It described its presence in individual tourist areas as a deliberate effort to record problems directly from those working in tourism and relay them to decision-makers.

The association said its round of contacts will continue across Crete, aiming for a tourism model that can respond to new market demands, remain competitive, and leave a larger footprint on local communities. The Ierapetra meeting comes as the wider region grapples with the effects of tourism activity on local economies, including in the Ierapetra retail sector, which recently reported a drop in summer sales.
