Nea Chora sardine festival draws large crowds to Chania for 31st year

Large crowds gathered at the small harbor of Nea Chora in Chania on Monday evening for the 31st edition of “Pyrofania,” the traditional sardine festival, according to Flashnews.

Residents of the area grilled fish appetizers over charcoal, with many people turning out to sample the food along the waterfront, the report said.

The Mayor of Chania attended the celebration, accompanied by municipal councilors, joining local residents and visitors in enjoying the featured dish, according to the report.

Music and dancing featured throughout the evening. The choir of the Agia Aikaterini parish in Nea Chora opened the entertainment, before the music group “Notios Dromos” and traditional cultural associations — including “O Psiloritis,” “Stavraetoi” and the “Folklore Society of Chania Yiannis and Stella Agiasmenaki” — took over, Flashnews reported.

The festival is one of several cultural gatherings held across Crete in early September, alongside other events in Crete such as the 12th Mikis Theodorakis Festival, which also opened in Chania this week.
