Northerly winds to reach 8 Beaufort off Crete as autumn weather sets in from Tuesday
Autumn weather is expected to set in across Greece from Tuesday, September 8, with temperatures falling nationwide, though the drop will be milder in the Aegean and Crete than elsewhere, according to meteorologist Thodoris Kolydas.
The temperature decrease will be most noticeable from Tuesday onward, Kolydas said in a post on the subject. Western Greece will see a more pronounced shift toward autumnal conditions, while in Northern Greece the average maximum temperature is expected to fall to 26-27°C. Central Greece and Thessaly are forecast to hover around 28°C. In Attica the drop will be slower, and in the Aegean and Crete the decrease will not be intense.
Northerly winds are set to strengthen in the Aegean, reaching 6 to 7 Beaufort, with local gusts off southern Crete potentially touching 8 Beaufort, according to the forecast. From Wednesday, instability is expected to increase over the mainland’s mountainous interior, with a chance of showers and storms mainly in the Pindos range, toward Mount Olympus, and inland Peloponnese.
Toward the end of the week, winds are expected to ease, minimum temperatures will fall further, and conditions will take on a more distinctly autumnal character, Kolydas noted.
Sharper drop expected in the west
In his post, Kolydas gave specific figures: in Northern Greece, the median maximum temperature is projected to fall from 29.6°C to 26.6°C, while in Western Greece the decrease is more pronounced, from 34.2°C to 27.2°C. He said the strongest rain signal is also located there, with a 47% probability of at least 5 mm of rainfall on September 13.
“In Central Greece and Thessaly, temperatures are heading toward 28°C, with moderate chances of rain. Eastern Sterea and Attica show a slower decline, while the drop in the Peloponnese is significant. In the Aegean and Crete, temperatures are decreasing more gently and the rain signal remains very weak,” Kolydas said.
He added that there is no sign of a prolonged, nationwide rain episode. “In the Aegean, however, local wind reinforcements remain significant, with a particularly strong signal for at least 6 Beaufort off Andros on September 8,” he concluded.
A low-pressure system currently positioned near Italy may move toward Greece, bringing rain initially mainly to Western and Northern Greece, according to the report. The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts’ 15-day trend also points to the strongest rain signal in Western Greece, with no extended, countrywide rain episode currently indicated.
The forecast follows a stretch of warm, dry conditions across the island; a recent forecast for sunshine and northerly winds on Tuesday had put highs near 35°C, while earlier in the week Meteo.gr had already flagged wind gusts of up to 120 km/h in Crete as summer heat persisted.
