BOAK highway to close daily near Xiropotamos bridge from September 7 to 12

The existing Northern Road Axis of Crete (BOAK) will be closed to traffic for several hours a day from Monday, September 7, through Saturday, September 12, 2026, according to contractor AKTOR. The company said the closures are needed to remove unstable rock masses following emergency geotechnical conditions found during excavation work at chainage 8+300 of the project, in the area of the Xiropotamos bridge.

According to AKTOR, the road will be shut each day from 09:00 to 17:00: Monday, September 7; Tuesday, September 8; Wednesday, September 9; Thursday, September 10; Friday, September 11; and Saturday, September 12.

Detour routes for cars and buses

During the closure hours, small vehicles and buses travelling from Neapoli toward Agios Nikolaos will be directed via the Old National Road, then Lakonia and the Kritsa junction before reaching Agios Nikolaos.

In the opposite direction, vehicles and buses heading from Agios Nikolaos toward Neapoli will use the Old National Road exclusively, AKTOR said.

Heavy vehicles to keep using BOAK

Heavy-vehicle traffic will continue to use the existing BOAK, according to the announcement, with the works paused periodically each day to allow the road to reopen. Drivers planning trips across this stretch of Crete, including those who rent a car in Crete, should expect delays during the stated hours and consider the alternative route in advance.
