Crete forecast: heatwave continues Monday with highs of 36-37°C, winds up to 7 Beaufort

Crete will see clear skies and highs of 36-37°C on Monday, August 24, with northerly winds reaching 5-6 Beaufort and locally up to 7 Beaufort, according to the forecast issued by Greece’s National Meteorological Service (EMY).

Temperatures on the island are expected to start the day around 25°C and climb through the afternoon. The high temperatures that continued into Sunday, August 23, are set to persist with little change as the new week begins.

Nationally, the mainland will see highs of 37-38°C, with local peaks of 39-40°C, while island regions will generally reach 35-37°C, with 38°C possible in eastern areas. Skies will be mostly clear, though scattered clouds and localized showers or storms are possible over mountainous areas of the mainland, particularly in the afternoon, with isolated storms possible in the mountains of Macedonia.

Winds will blow mainly from the north across the country, reaching 3-4 Beaufort in the Ionian Sea and strengthening to 4-6 Beaufort in the Aegean, with local gusts of up to 7 Beaufort due to the meltemi. The sustained heat and wind combination has contributed to elevated fire danger; Crete has been rated at high wildfire risk for Monday, August 24, according to civil protection authorities.

Outlook for the rest of the week

EMY forecasts show little change in temperatures on Tuesday, August 25, with winds from the north at 3-4 Beaufort in the west, 4-6 Beaufort in the east, and locally up to 7 Beaufort in the Aegean. Skies are expected to remain generally clear, with the possibility of localized rain over mountainous areas in the north during the afternoon.

Conditions on Wednesday, August 26, are expected to be similar, with sunshine dominating most regions and limited instability confined mainly to northern mountain areas. Northerly winds in the Aegean will remain strong, reaching 6 Beaufort. A slight drop in temperatures is forecast for eastern areas by Thursday, August 27.

According to EMY, the intense heat is expected to persist at least until the middle of the week, in line with the broader pattern in which the heatwave affecting Greece has been forecast to continue through August 26. Forecasters say there are indications of a gradual easing in the second half of the week, but the exact day when temperatures will return to more seasonal levels cannot yet be determined with confidence based on current data.
