Crete forecast: high temperatures continue Sunday, August 23, with highs of 36-37°C

Greece’s National Meteorological Service (EMY) forecasts generally clear skies for Crete on Sunday, August 23, with temperatures ranging from 25°C to 36-37°C in places. According to EMY, winds will blow from the north and northwest at 4 to 5 Beaufort, strengthening locally to 6 Beaufort in the afternoon.
The forecast follows a stretch of high temperatures across Crete this weekend, as warm conditions persist across the region.
Heatwave conditions on the mainland
Separately, meteo.gr, run by the National Observatory of Athens, reported that heatwave conditions would affect mainland areas of Greece on Sunday. The service’s general forecast for the country describes limited cloud cover nationwide, with showers expected in mountainous areas after midday, and reduced visibility in the morning locally in western Greece and the Cyclades due to possible fog.
For Crete and the Aegean islands specifically, meteo.gr forecast temperatures between 19°C and 33-35°C, though it noted that the East Aegean islands could locally reach 37-38°C. Winds over the Aegean were expected to blow from northerly directions at 3-4 Beaufort in the north, 4-5 Beaufort in central and eastern areas, and from the west and northwest at 4-5 Beaufort in the southern seas. Northwesterly winds of 3-4 Beaufort, locally reaching 5, were forecast for the Ionian Sea.
The two services’ temperature ranges for Crete differ slightly, reflecting separate forecasting models; EMY projected highs up to 36-37°C, while meteo.gr projected highs up to 33-35°C, with the higher figure applying to the East Aegean rather than Crete specifically.
Elsewhere in the country, meteo.gr forecast highs of 37-39°C in Thessaly, locally reaching 40-41°C, and similarly elevated readings across other mainland regions, as part of the broader heatwave affecting Greece. The warm spell in Crete comes amid a wider period of elevated temperatures across Greece continuing into late August.
