Crete sees rising wedding tourism as couples choose the island’s coastal and rural scenery

Wedding tourism in Crete is growing, with couples from abroad increasingly choosing the island as a destination to marry, according to a report by Kriti TV cited by Zarpanews. The report says couples are mainly arriving from Britain, Germany, France, Poland and the Netherlands to hold ceremonies on beaches and in traditional Cretan settings.
According to the report, the municipalities of Chersonissos, Agios Nikolaos and Platanias are drawing increasing interest from couples abroad who choose to marry on the island. Civil wedding ceremonies are being combined with a broader travel experience that includes stays at hotels, visits to olive groves, traditional villages and other distinctive locations across Crete.
Coastal and countryside settings
The report highlights Crete’s combination of sea, mountains, olive groves and natural light as elements that make the island attractive for wedding ceremonies. Couples are choosing venues ranging from beachside settings with sunset backdrops to countryside locations away from the coast.
For visitors, the range of natural settings on offer forms part of the island’s broader appeal, alongside its beaches and other outdoor experiences available to travelers. The report frames the trend as part of Crete’s wider positioning in international tourism, alongside islands such as Santorini and Rhodes, which are also cited as popular wedding destinations.
Regions such as Platanias, which also hosts cultural events during the summer season, are among the areas noted in the report as attracting wedding-related visits.
