Tourism minister opens renovated Agios Nikolaos marina after €1.9 million upgrade

Greece’s Minister of Tourism, Olga Kefalogianni, officially inaugurated the renovated marina of Agios Nikolaos in Lasithi on August 18, according to CretaOne.

Metropolitan Gerasimos of Petra and Chersonisos performed the blessing ceremony. Parliament’s Deputy Speaker Giannis Plakiotakis and the Secretary General of the Ministry of Tourism, Vasiliki Koutsioukou, also attended.

Project scope and cost

Agios Nikolaos Mayor Manolis Menegakis said the marina’s renovation marks the start of a new period for the town’s marine tourism. He described the project as an investment of more than €1.9 million, covering new floating piers, upgraded facilities for boats, LED lighting, photovoltaic panels, electric vehicle chargers, network upgrades, improved accessibility for people with disabilities, and portable open-air infrastructure for events.

The mayor placed particular emphasis on the licensing of the municipal marina as a Tourist Port, which he said was achieved with the cooperation of the Ministry of Tourism.

Broader context

Deputy Speaker Plakiotakis, in his remarks, referred to a significant shortage of mooring capacity across the country despite continuously rising demand.

The marina upgrade adds to a series of tourism-related developments across Crete this season, as the sector continues to expand alongside plans for new luxury hotel projects on the island. Officials have also flagged workforce pressures in the industry, with a regional official recently noting that thousands remain unemployed in Crete even as tourism businesses seek foreign staff. Meanwhile, maritime traffic elsewhere on the island has stayed heavy, with Heraklion port recording tens of thousands of arrivals over a recent ten-day period.
