Samaria Gorge closes both entrances today due to weather

Samaria Gorge in Chania is closed from both entrances today, Tuesday, August 18, 2026, due to weather conditions, according to the Organization of Natural Environment and Climate Change (OFYPEKA).

The organization said the decision was based on today’s nowcasting data and an updated morning forecast from the National Meteorological Service (EMY), which predicted rainfall of up to 9mm in the Xyloskalo area. OFYPEKA said these levels exceed the approved thresholds set by the Region of Chania for the gorge’s operation, prompting the closure from both entrances for the day.

Samaria is one of the most visited gorges in Crete, and access is regularly suspended when weather conditions are deemed unsafe for hikers along the route.

The closure follows a similar suspension on July 31, when the gorge was shut due to strong winds. It comes as forecasts for Crete have shown a mix of clear spells and localized rain in recent weeks.
