CretaOne lists seven Crete spots that are more beautiful early in the morning

Local news outlet CretaOne has published a list of seven places in Crete that it says look and feel different in the early morning, before roads and beaches fill with visitors and the August heat sets in.
According to the outlet, the hours right after sunrise offer a chance to see popular sites with fewer people around, milder temperatures and different light, even for visitors who have already been there before.
Chania’s old Venetian harbor before the city wakes up
The Venetian harbor is one of the busiest spots in Crete during summer, but CretaOne notes that early in the morning the tables along the waterfront are still empty and foot traffic in the narrow streets is limited. A walk beside the sea toward the Egyptian lighthouse can be done without the crowds seen later in the day. Visit Greece describes the old harbor as the most recognizable landmark in Chania, with the lighthouse serving as one of the city’s symbols.
Lake Kournas with still water
Crete’s only natural freshwater lake looks different before the main wave of visitors arrives, CretaOne says, with the surrounding hills reflected more clearly on a calmer surface. The lake is a protected wetland that is home to species including coots, herons, cormorants and turtles, according to the outlet.
Knossos ahead of the daily rush
CretaOne recommends visiting large archaeological sites early to avoid both the heat and the heavier crowds of later hours, and says this applies especially to Knossos. With fewer people around, it is easier to take in the different levels of the palace and the scale of the most significant Minoan palatial complex, the outlet notes. Knossos is listed among Heraklion’s leading cultural attractions on the official Visit Greece site.
The Lasithi plateau as the day begins
No single landmark is required here, CretaOne writes, since the drive itself through villages, farmland and the mountains of Dikti is the main draw. Early morning keeps the plateau away from the heat and traffic that build up along the coast later in the day, according to the outlet, which points to the approach from Kastamonitsa as one scenic option. The Region of Crete’s official tourism portal describes this climb and the view toward the island’s largest plateau. Travelers seeking a similar break from the crowds may also look at Crete’s high-altitude Psiloritis plateau, another quieter alternative to busy August beaches.
Vai before the beach fills up
The well-known palm forest in eastern Crete is another place where arrival time can change the experience significantly, CretaOne says. Arriving before the main crowds allows visitors to see the sea, sand and palm trees in calmer conditions, and offers the added option of swimming and leaving before the hottest part of the day.
Matala before the day’s activity starts
Matala is usually associated with crowds, music, tavernas and a full beach, but the outlet says mornings look different. The caves opposite the settlement are gradually lit by the rising sun, the beach is quieter and visitors can walk through the village before the usual summer activity picks up.
Heraklion’s old harbor and the Koules fortress
CretaOne notes that a similar early walk is available even in the center of Heraklion, without the need to drive far. Starting at the Venetian harbor and walking toward the Koules fortress and the breakwater as the city wakes up is one option it highlights. An official feature on Heraklion cited by the outlet highlights both the old Venetian shipyards and the imposing 16th-century fortress.
CretaOne concludes that not every summer outing in Crete needs to start at 11am, adding that especially in August, two or three hours can change the experience of a place considerably through fewer crowds, milder temperatures and different light. For visitors planning their timing around the beach, the outlet has separately suggested Crete beaches worth visiting after 6pm as another way to avoid the midday crowds.
