Crete ranks as Greece’s most photographed island on social media, Condé Nast Traveller finds
Crete has been ranked the most photographed Greek island on social media, according to a new study published by international travel magazine Condé Nast Traveller.
The ranking is based on an analysis of anonymized geolocation data from photos uploaded to Popsa, a photo-album app, tracking which Greek islands travelers photograph most during their holidays.
Crete topped the list, ahead of popular destinations including Santorini, Rhodes, Corfu and Mykonos. According to the British magazine, the largest Greek island’s top position is attributed to its extensive geography and the wide variety of landscapes it offers. From rugged coastlines and gorges to secluded beaches, mountain villages, olive groves and historic sites, Crete offers numerous spots that attract photography enthusiasts.
Condé Nast Traveller notes that, unlike smaller and more saturated destinations, Crete allows visitors to discover lesser-known corners, avoiding crowds and producing more original photographic content. The magazine says the island’s varied natural scenery, its mix of mountains and sea, and its strong cultural identity are among the main reasons for its popularity with travelers.
Rest of the ranking
Santorini placed second, with its white houses and blue domes described as a lasting symbol of Greece abroad. It was followed by Rhodes, Corfu, Mykonos, Kos, Zakynthos, Kefalonia, Paros and Naxos.
The magazine points out that the hashtag #GreekIslands has surpassed 4.5 million posts on Instagram, reflecting the international appeal of the Greek islands. It also notes that the growing popularity of certain destinations creates challenges such as overtourism, and it advises travelers to seek out lesser-known spots and to visit attractions at quieter times for a better experience and more authentic images.
The ranking adds to Crete’s international profile, as the island has recorded consistently strong results in international rankings and travel surveys in recent years, both for its natural beauty and for the quality of its tourist experiences.
