Six inland spots offer relief from Crete’s August heat, away from the beaches

While August in Crete is typically associated with beaches and high temperatures, the island’s interior offers a different experience. Mountain villages, natural springs, gorges and green landscapes provide cooler alternatives away from the crowded coast, according to a report by CretaOne. Several of these locations can be visited as day trips.

Argyroupoli

Located on the border between the Chania and Rethymno regional units, Argyroupoli is known for the springs of Agia Dynami, running water and dense vegetation. The area’s old watermills, tree shade and mountain streams make it a popular destination for those seeking a break from the heat.

Lake Kournas

A few kilometers from Argyroupoli, Lake Kournas is surrounded by hills and vegetation, offering a landscape different from the typical image of Crete in August. The two locations can easily be combined in a single outing.

Psiloritis

The Psiloritis mountain range features mountain villages, small plateaus and deep gorges that contrast sharply with the crowded beaches of August. Visitors do not need to reach the summit; a drive through the villages and plateaus around the mountain is enough to experience a different side of the island. In the higher areas, evening temperatures can feel noticeably cooler than in coastal towns.

Lasithi Plateau

Situated at an altitude of roughly 800 meters, the Lasithi Plateau offers a distinct environment. The route among the plateau’s villages, surrounded by cultivated fields and the mountains of Dikti, provides an experience different from the tourist areas along the north coast, according to the report.

Chavgas Gorge

Near the Lasithi Plateau lies the Chavgas Gorge, the largest gorge in the area, running between the mountains of Dikti. Its lower section is relatively easy, while the terrain becomes more rugged further along the route. The report notes that visitors should take weather conditions and route difficulty into account.

Mountain villages of Psiloritis

Anogeia and other settlements on the slopes of Psiloritis offer a simpler option for a change of scenery. The area features stone buildings, town squares, cafes and roads leading toward the heart of the mountain range. An afternoon visit combined with a meal in one of the villages is suggested as a way to spend a day away from the coast.

According to the report, the appeal of Crete lies in the fact that, within relatively short distances, visitors can move from a crowded beach to a mountain village, a gorge, or an area with springs and running water.
