Chania’s Traditional Path continues with reenactment of Cretan wedding on Tuesday
The Municipality of Chania’s Traditional Path event continues for a fifth year, bringing tradition and music to the streets of the Old Town and the Venetian Harbor on Tuesday evenings.
On Tuesday, August 25, 2026, at 20:00, the Giannis Agiasmenakis Folklore Group of Chania will present a “Reenactment of the Cretan Wedding,” accompanied by the Pontian Association and Friends of the Rethymno Prefecture “Arothymia” and the rizitiko music group “Pachnes.”
Musicians and route
According to the municipality, the performance will feature musicians Manolis Bompolakis on violin, Stefanos Paterakis on lute, Grigoris Atsalakis on guitar, Giannis Vergerakis on daoulaki and askomandoura (bagpipe), Pavlos Semertzidis on Pontic lyra, and Eirinaios Tsimenidis on daouli drum.
The Traditional Path will begin at Neorio Moro, with a stop planned at the Gyali Mosque before ending at the square of the Church of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary (the Metropolis) in Chania.
Members of the folklore association said the event aims to give the thousands of visitors expected to attend an experience drawn from local tradition, according to the municipality. The event is one of several experiences the municipality organizes through the summer season.
The municipality said the performances will continue every Tuesday over the coming months, aiming to highlight the region’s traditional clothing, music, dance and vocal heritage through the participation of local cultural associations. Similar cultural gatherings feature among the island’s events calendar this summer.
The wedding-themed reenactment comes as Crete has seen rising wedding tourism, with couples increasingly choosing the island’s coastal and rural scenery for ceremonies.
