Rethymno sea scouts sail traditional wooden boats during JamboCretto 2026 gathering

Sea Scouts from Rethymno carried out training voyages aboard traditional wooden boats on Friday, August 21, and Saturday, August 22, 2026, as part of the 7th Pan-Cretan Meeting of Scout Leaders, known as “JamboCretto,” taking place in Rethymno from August 20 to 23.

The voyages used two Sea Scout vessels belonging to the Rethymno Scouts, named “Eleftheria” and “Polikos II,” according to the organizers’ announcement.

Underage members of the participating scout groups took part in the trips, which organizers said gave young people the chance to experience the sea firsthand, learn about sailing and sea-scouting traditions, take on responsibilities within a team, and gain experiences and memories not easily available in everyday life.

The activity was carried out under the responsibility of experienced, trained adult leaders from the Greek Scouts’ Regional Offices of Western and Eastern Crete, with safety and the educational value of the experience cited as priorities, the announcement said.

According to the organizers, the sea represents more than a destination within the scouting movement, describing it as a way for young members to learn to trust their team, respect nature, test their own abilities and move forward with courage.

The sea voyages formed part of the wider events in Crete program surrounding JamboCretto 2026, which brings together scout troop leaders from across the island for four days of activities in Rethymno.
