Heraklion mayor inspects greenery works on Venetian Walls ahead of school year

Heraklion Mayor Alexis Kalokairinos inspected ongoing maintenance and landscaping work on the slopes and level sections of the Venetian Walls, accompanied by Deputy Mayor for Technical Works and Green Spaces Dimitris Spyridakis and associate Aristeidis Bolakis, the Municipality of Heraklion said.

According to the municipality, the works are being carried out at an intensive pace under the coordination of its Green Spaces Department and are extending to various points across the city as well as villages within the Municipality of Heraklion.

Schools prioritized ahead of new term

Alongside the Venetian Walls interventions, the municipality said particular priority is being given to maintaining greenery at schools, so that grounds are handed over clean, tidy and safe for students and staff when the new school year begins.

Crews are also taking advantage of lighter August traffic to prune palm trees along central roads such as Ethnikis Antistaseos and Knossou avenues, the municipality said, describing the pruning as a light, seasonally appropriate intervention limited to removing dry fronds. Maintenance and repair work on irrigation networks is also under way, which the municipality said would allow for supplementary planting in the coming period.

Work extends across public spaces

The municipality noted that maintenance is taking place across all communal areas, including parks, squares, schoolyards, the Venetian Walls, and tree-lined streets both within and outside the urban fabric. It asked passersby to pay attention to signage in affected areas.
