Seven driving routes across Crete worth taking at least once
Crete offers dozens of scenic driving routes connecting its coastline, mountains and inland villages, according to a feature published by Zarpanews. The outlet selected seven routes it says are worth driving at least once, ranging from short day trips near Heraklion to longer journeys through the Psiloritis mountains and the island’s southern and western coasts.
Heraklion – Knossos – Archanes – Myrtia
This route begins in Heraklion and passes through the archaeological site of Knossos before continuing to Archanes, a village surrounded by vineyards, olive groves and views of Mount Youchtas. The route can continue to Myrtia, the village associated with author Nikos Kazantzakis and home to the Nikos Kazantzakis Museum.
Chania – Lake Kournas – Argyroupoli – Asi Gonia – Kallikratis – Frangokastello
Starting in Chania, this route passes Lake Kournas, Crete’s only natural freshwater lake, before reaching Argyroupoli and its springs. It then climbs through the mountain villages of Asi Gonia and Kallikratis before descending to the southern coast at Frangokastello, where a Venetian fortress stands by the sea. The Region of Crete lists this route among its suggested car or motorcycle itineraries.
Chania – Sfinari – Kambos – Amygdalokefali – Elafonisi – Elos – Topolia
This route follows the western and southwestern coast of Chania, passing through Sfinari, Kambos and Amygdalokefali before reaching Elafonisi. The return leg runs through Elos and Topolia, forming a loop around western Chania. The Region of Crete includes the same route among its suggestions, noting that it can also be done with an overnight stay.
Rethymno – Armeni – Koxare – Kourtaliotiko Gorge – Preveli – Plakias – Rodakino
Heading from north to south, this route passes through Armeni and Koxare before entering the Kourtaliotiko Gorge, where steep cliffs line the descent toward the southern coast. It can continue to the historic Preveli Monastery, Damnoni, Plakias and Rodakino. The Region of Crete presents this itinerary in detail as a suggested road trip.
Rethymno – Arkadi – Ancient Eleftherna – Margarites
This inland route travels from Rethymno to the historic Arkadi Monastery, one of the island’s most significant historical sites, and continues to the ancient site of Eleftherna. The next stop is Margarites, a village known for its long pottery-making tradition, before the route loops back to Rethymno. It is listed as an official suggested itinerary by the Region of Crete.
Anogeia – Zominthos – Nida Plateau
Starting in the mountain village of Anogeia, this route climbs toward Psiloritis, with the landscape becoming increasingly bare and mountainous. It passes through the Zominthos area before reaching the Nida Plateau. The Region of Crete describes this route, noting the area’s mountainous terrain and access to Nida, where visitors can see traditional stone “mitata” shelters linked to the region’s pastoral herding tradition.
Agios Nikolaos – Limnes – Fourni – Vrouchas – Plaka – Elounda
The final route combines inland villages with the Lasithi coastline. From Agios Nikolaos, it heads to Limnes and climbs toward Fourni before descending again toward the sea, passing views of the Gulf of Mirabello and Spinalonga. From Vrouchas, the road leads to Plaka and then Elounda. The Region of Crete recommends the Limnes – Vrouchas – Plaka segment for car or motorcycle travel, noting the combination of mountain and coastal scenery. Zarpanews notes that Plaka is a good spot to stop opposite Spinalonga before continuing to Elounda and back to Agios Nikolaos.

According to Zarpanews, distances on Crete’s map can be misleading, since a route of just a few dozen kilometers can pass through mountains, gorges, villages and coastline, often taking longer than expected. The outlet advises checking road conditions, navigation and any temporary traffic restrictions before taking mountainous or remote routes, as conditions can change.
