Region of Crete deploys digital tools to support 2026–2028 mosquito control programme

Crete Locals News

The Region of Crete has announced that its Integrated Mosquito Control Programme for 2026–2028 is underway across the island, according to the project’s operational plan.

To keep residents informed and encourage public participation, the region is using digital tools to support the programme. The e-bite platform allows electronic monitoring of the project’s progress, with crew schedules for each Regional Unit posted on a weekly basis.

In addition, the “Mosquito Vision” mobile application, available on Google Play and the App Store, gives residents a daily five-day forecast of expected mosquito nuisance levels in all settlements across the Region of Crete, covering both evening hours (20:30–22:30) and night hours (after 22:30).

Public participation features

The application also allows residents to take an active role by:

reporting possible mosquito breeding sites, and recording the level of mosquito nuisance in their area of interest, contributing data that supports the programme’s implementation.

Responsibility for overseeing the correct execution of the programme lies with the Directorate of Public Health of the Region of Crete, assisted by the Directorates of Public Health and Social Welfare of the four Regional Units.

Contact information

Residents seeking information about the programme or mosquito protection measures can contact the following numbers, Monday to Friday between 08:00 and 16:00: 800 11 24424 (toll-free from a landline) or 2611 104238 (from a landline or mobile, at standard local rates).

The Region of Crete said that effective mosquito control is a shared responsibility. It noted that residents can help limit breeding sites and reduce nuisance by removing standing water from yards, gardens, terraces and other private spaces, and by applying recommended personal protection measures.

The region said cooperation between residents and public services is a key condition for the success of the Integrated Mosquito Control Programme and for effective protection of public health across Crete.
