BOAK to close near Xiropotamos bridge on Friday for rock removal work

Traffic on the New Road Axis of Crete (BOAK) will be suspended at the Xiropotamos bridge, at kilometer point 8+300, on Friday, August 7, 2026, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., according to an announcement about the ongoing highway construction project.
The closure was deemed necessary due to emergency geotechnical conditions in the area where excavation work is underway, in order to remove unstable rock masses, the announcement said.
Alternative routes during the closure
Small vehicles and buses traveling from Neapoli towards Agios Nikolaos will be directed via the Old National Road, through Lakonia and the Kritsa junction, to Agios Nikolaos, according to the announcement.
Small vehicles and buses traveling from Agios Nikolaos towards Neapoli will use the Old National Road exclusively, the announcement said.
Heavy vehicle traffic will continue to use the existing BOAK route, with work periodically paused to allow the road to reopen during the day, according to the announcement.
