Crete Included in National Rollout of 1,000 New AI Traffic Cameras

Crete is included in a planned nationwide installation of 1,000 new artificial-intelligence traffic cameras, alongside Attica and Thessaloniki, under a tender currently underway, according to Greece’s Ministry of Digital Governance.

The project is budgeted at 44 million euros, with an option to expand to 88 million euros, and forms part of the planned Unified National System for Digital Recording and Management of Police Traffic Checks and Fines, the ministry said.

According to the ministry, the new cameras are intended to operate on a similar basis to AI cameras already being piloted in Athens, automatically detecting a range of serious road traffic violations.

How the system is designed to work

Speaking at a government event titled “Road Safety – Traffic Policing – 2026 Review – Digital Future,” Minister of Digital Governance Dimitris Papastergiou said the cameras are linked to a dedicated information system that checks recorded evidence before a violation is officially confirmed.

In Attica, six AI-based traffic police cameras are already in operation, capable of automatically detecting violations such as speeding, running red lights, mobile phone use while driving, and failure to wear a seatbelt. The number of these cameras is expected to increase to eight, officials said.

Separately, 25 cameras mounted on OASA buses in Attica already record illegal use of and stopping or parking in bus lanes. In addition, 388 regional cameras targeting red-light violations have been installed and were expected to begin operating on August 5, 2026.

Early data from the Athens pilot

Figures presented at the same event showed that, as of July 22, 2026, the AI camera system in Attica had confirmed 4,127 violations. In total, the system had logged 60,999 recordings of possible violations, of which 36,403 had already been reviewed by police officers before a violation was formally confirmed.

No timeline has yet been announced for when the new cameras will be installed specifically in Crete.
