Wildfires have burned 42% of Attica’s forests in ten years, EU data show
A total of 15 major wildfires have burned more than 800,000 stremmata (about 80,000 hectares) in Greece’s Attica region between 2017 and August 3, 2026, according to the Copernicus Rapid Mapping Service and the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS).
The figures mean that about 42% of the region’s forest area has burned in the past 10 years. Forest land in Attica covers roughly 1,230,000 stremmata, and about 512,000 stremmata have burned over the decade, according to data presented by meteo.gr and the National Observatory of Athens.
The wider Attica region covers 2,500,000 stremmata, a total that excludes Troizinia, the islands and the Athens basin. Wildfires have burned 32% of that total area over the same 10-year period.
Until shortly before the start of the 2026 fire season, 38% of the region’s forests had burned over the previous 9 years, according to meteo.gr. The figures were updated after the recent large forest fire at Porto Germeno.
