About Vamvakia lighthouse at Sitia

Located on Cape Vamvakia, north of Sitia Airport, the Sitia Lighthouse, also known as Exo Fanari, is part of the network of lighthouses constructed by the French Lighthouse Company at the end of the 19th century throughout Crete. It began operating in 1892.

This stone lighthouse, which once served the port of Sitia city, was built on a sloping terrain with a cross-shaped plan. It featured spacious rooms with fireplaces for the lighthouse keepers, basements, and a lantern area. Unfortunately, it now stands in a deteriorated state, with much of its walls and roof having collapsed.

Despite its condition, the lighthouse’s location remains impressive, with towering cliffs washed by the sea and stunning views of the ocean from all angles. A dirt road allows for easy access to this remarkable site.
