About Meronas Koules
Following the Great Cretan Revolution of 1866, over 100 defensive towers were constructed by the Turks to regulate the Christian population. These towers, known as koules, were strategically placed to oversee the passages between various regions of Crete. One such example is the Koule of Meronas, located in the village of Meronas in the Amari province. This spot offers breathtaking views of the Amari and Potami valleys. Unfortunately, the Koule is in poor condition and is situated next to the church of Prophet Elijah (Profitis Ilias). Visitors can reach the site by car via a dirt track.
