About Matala tower (koule)
Located on Kastri hill, Koules of Matala overlooks the renowned Matala beach and is easily accessible, being situated near the path leading to the Red Beach.
Constructed by the Ottomans following the significant Cretan Revolutions of 1866, this small tower is one of over 100 defensive towers (koules) built across Crete. Its primary function was to monitor the Matala beach below.
Although the tower now lies in ruins, the foundations of the walls and its layout can still be observed. It is believed that an older fortress may have existed at the site prior to the Ottoman tower, as there are remnants of a beacon (fryktoria) close by, which was used to light fires and transmit signals.
