About Koules of Loutro
Aside from the famous Turkish forts (koules) in Askifou, numerous other towers were constructed in the present-day province of Sfakia to quell local revolutionaries and subdue the Sfakians. The remains of the Turkish tower, or koule, can still be found in Loutro, where it once towered over the existing settlement as the largest koule in the region. Built in 1868, the koule featured significant dimensions, two raised tower positions to the east and west, and ample space for guards. The structure is rectangular in shape, with some of its walls still standing. Outside, a large cistern provided water for the fort, and the ruins of a small windmill can still be seen nearby.
The Loutro koules were supported by Kastella Fort at Loutro port, Agia Ekaterini Tower at Anopolis, Timios Stavros Fort, and Agios Ioannis Fort.
