About Historical Museum of Vorizia
The “Spilios” Historical Museum of Vorizia is situated in the village of Vorizia in the Heraklion prefecture and is housed in a cave (spilios) above the village. Prior to the establishment of the museum, the cave was utilized for cheese production.
The museum officially opened its doors on August 16, 2014. It showcases artifacts from World War II, providing visitors with insights into the region’s history, particularly the devastating impact of the Germans on the area and their battles with Greek guerrillas (e.g., at the Trahili position).
Visitors can view a range of exhibits, including machinery and equipment used in the fields, as well as numerous objects from World War II. During the war, the Germans burned down the village but were never held accountable for their crimes against the local population.
